Will man go any faster in a production vehicle?
After witnessing the Bugatti Veyron travel at 253 MPH on a private race track, you begin to wonder if man will ever travel any faster in a production vehicle. Worst yet, will a normal consumer who would rather not spend millions of dollars on a single vehicle be able to do so for under $80,000 in this lifetime? I’ve felt the rush of 185 MPH on two wheels and I can’t even begin to imagine the...
RUN FOR YOUR LIVES, It’s an Animated Cursor
Oh well, so much for Windows being the most secure OS. It seems something as small as a malformed animated cursor can bring Vsta to its knees.
Microsoft has warned that it is aware of limited and targeted attacks impacting a critical vulnerability in Microsoft Windows Animated cursor handling. At the basis of the zero-day vulnerability is insufficient format validation, before cursors,...

Firefox 3 Alpha 3 released
The third alpha of Firefox 3 is available now and while it’s still mainly oriented to get testers around the lot of work that is going on Gecko, Firefox’s web page rendering engine, we can find much more interesting features here.
As announced, support for animated PNG is included, so it seems to be on track to make it for Firefox 3. I wasn’t able to find any one I could try. Not even the samples...
RSS at Nordstrom?
So - I was looking for kate spade at Nordstrom. I typed kate spade into the search box and on the search results page there it was - the orange icon! I can find out everything I always wanted to know about kate at Nordstrom in my RSS reader.
Let me know if you know of other unique applications using RSS. What an advertising plan. Every time I open my reader, there is the Nordstrom name! Of...
How to create smoke in Photoshop
The Abduzeedo weblog has a detailed guide for achieving an attractive smoke effect using Photoshop.
I wouldn’t call it the most true-to-life smoke I’ve ever seen, but it is attractive, and it provides a nice introduction to how you can use blurs, filters, and gradients to get some pretty interesting results. I’m far from what one might consider a Photoshop expert, but I gave...
Firefox 3a3 Released
Earlier this week I had commented that neither the Firefox 3 Status or Gecko 1.9 or even the Weekly Update meetings had any indication as to a release date for the Gran Paradiso Alpha 3 milestone. Well, Mozilla has released the Firefox 3/Gecko 1.9 Alpha 3 milestone earlier today. A couple of new features (see complete release notes) for this milestone:
Animated PNG (APNG) images are now...
Download of the Day: CUPS-PDF (Mac)
Mac OS X only: CUPS-PDF lets you add a virtual printer to your Mac that spits out - you guessed it - PDFs.
Although Macs come with the wonderful “Save as PDF” option baked in, there are plenty of ways that a virtual printer like this can come in handy. Aside from the fact that I’ve set CUPS-PDF as my default printer (so I can just hit Cmd-P and then Enter whenever I want to...

Ask A Ninja Photo on VH1’s Web Junk TV
A photo I shot of Ask A Ninja creators Kent Nichols and Douglas Sarine at their DVD Release Party in Hollywood in December was used in the production of the Web Junk TV episode “40 Greatest Internet Superstars” which airs tonight at 8pm on VH1.
Here’s the video segment with Kent and Doug. They came in at #10 out of 40, being barely edged out by Tom “your friend” Anderson of MySpace.

Put Google Talk in your Firefox sidebar
The Digital Inspiration weblog describes how to integrate the previously mentioned Google Talk gadget into your Firefox sidebar.
It’s a very simple process: just create a new bookmark with this Google Talk url, then tick the option in the bookmark’s properties to “Load this bookmark in the sidebar”. Arguably much better than it’s desktop counterpart, this is a...

Find your lost child with a USB drive
A reader at the Daily Cup of Tech site hung a USB drive with the previously-mentioned lost drive program around his three-year-old son’s neck to keep track of him on a trip to Disneyworld. Turns out the drive served its purpose well:
Our three year old did just what we thought he would do - Disappeared. Within 13 minutes of being ‘lost’ though, my cellphone rang. My three year...
Getting our brains in gear for Coffee Morning
mike.jpg Originally uploaded by digitalagency’s.
I thought more of the Edinburgh Coffee Morners would know about the DS Lite and things like Dr Kawashima’s brain training. They didn’t and, as you can see, our Godfather Mike needs a bit more training before his mental age comes down from the 80s. Oh dear. There are some

HOWTO: Setting up Apple TV
It turns out that setting up Apple TV and getting it to function couldn’t be easier. Here’s a quick run down of the steps involved.
Attach the power cord. Remove the plastic wrapping from the Apple TV unit and insert the power cord into its jack. It fits very snugly and you may need to apply pressure to get it to seat properly.

More Details about the Samsung USB Monitor
This has to be the most innovative product so far this year! The Samsung SyncMaster 940UX is plug and play monitor, which when plugged into a PC it automatically installs software that emulates a low-end VGA graphics card and driver. Ingenious!

CUPS-PDF for OS X: Make a PDF "Printer"
Filed under: OS, Software, Odds and ends, Open Source Sometimes my students annoy me, particularly when they turn in papers as Microsoft Word documents (but not just then). I have to open each one and go through the Save as PDF dialog over and over again. It occurred to me, however, that computers are good at doing repetitive tasks (that’s why I’m the instructor, it only took a couple...
Hundreds queue for Sheep Testicles
Yes, you read the title correct, hundreds of insane people queued up for up to an hour for a chance to taste something different at the 16th annual Mountain Oyster Fry. Servers at five booths dispensed about 130 pounds of “fried oysters,” or sheep testicles, at the Saturday event in this historic mining town, Virginia City.
If you are interested to join these bunch of insane people, then go...

Dugg
Totally apropos, within 30 minutes of sitting down to chat with Digg CEO Jay Adelson (who we just learned is a native New Yorker), we hit the Digg front page. The story is actually a link to a very cool in-depth Lifehacker article on Tumblr. We’re long time fans of Lifehacker (they broke the story on Channel Frederator when we launched in ‘05) and we were thrilled to read Gina Trapani’s thorough...

Tumblr
Tumblr is something that allows you to create Tumblelogs. What? What’s a tumblelog?
To make a simple analogy: If blogs are journals, tumblelogs are scrapbooks.
You can also look at tumblelogs as slightly more structured blogs that make it easier, faster, and more fun to post and share stuff you find or create. Is Tumblr better/worse than Blogger, TypePad,...

Animated PNGs support added to Mozilla code
Proposed a few years ago by Vladimir Vukicevic and Stuart Parmenter, support for Animated Portable Network Graphics (APNG) images has finally landed on the trunk, Mozilla’s main development code.
PNG, is an image format developed in the mid-90s, mainly as an alternative to GIF files which were (and still are) widely used in millions of web sites after Unisys, the owner of the patent for this file...
How Smart Are Your Playlists?
iTunes features two types of playlists, the first being the standard bucket-like playlist, where you can drag and drop tunes to your heart’s content, and the second, smart playlists which fill with songs based on criteria you choose, whether they be by genre, artist, song length, or any other criteria. With so many options to choose from, the opportunities are seemingly limitless.

Dyson Root 6
Dynon’s Root 6 really sucks, but that’s a good thing in the case of hand held vacuums. With twice the power of other hand helds, it’ll never clog or lose suction. The Root 6 uses a rechargeable lithium ion battery and comes with a specially designed combination brush/stair tool for cleaning.
There’s no need for dirt bags with the built-in clear bin, and the “one-touch emptying” system allows...
