Blogsome Customisations
I want to start listing off a few of the customisations I have made to my blog. Most of them are really simple, cut and paste pieces of code from the Blogsome forum. The main one is the extra pages I have created:
Archive Categories Comments About Popular Posts Blogroll
These pages use a “Page”, which is blank and then smarty tags inject some PHP into the page to generate the lists.
So, to...

iPhone First Impressions
Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, iPhone It was difficult, but I finally tore myself away from playing with my 8GB iPhone to put together a First Impressions post. I tried touching on a few things that we might not have discussed before, or at least things that I particularly appreciate that might not have made it into the keynote or video spotlights. Given the complexity and depth of such a...

uTorrent for Mac
Lots of the youngsters out there are clogging up the Internet tubes with their torrents and their Rock and Roll music. Sadly, the choice of BitTorrent clients (BitTorrent, in case you aren’t familiar, is a distributed peer to peer downloading protocol. The more people who download something, the faster it is for everyone… in theory) on OS X has...

David Pogue writes that the iPhone lives up to...
David Pogue writes that the iPhone lives up to most of its hype. Summary: typing is so-so, browser good, network slow, email is great, and a modified Russian reversal joke: “On the iPhone, you don’t check your voice mail; it checks you”. (thx, david) Update: Walt Mossberg has a much more in-depth review…he liked it less than Pogue, I think. Regarding the Microsoft Exchange...

Petrol Prices Around The World
Another post from the great travel blog, Gadling. This chart shows petrol (gas) prices around the world and show just how much we have to pay here in the UK to fill our cars. (via NOGG3R5’s shared items in Google Reader)

Calling John Appleseed...
Filed under: Cult of Mac, Odds and ends, iPhone
Do you get the sense that Apple goofed up a bit while rushing out the iPhone activation videos? It’s not just the 80GB iPhone. Aren’t all fake numbers supposed to start with a 555? Anyway, yes, this is the same phone number for John Appleseed that was in the iPhone preview video from last Friday. And, yes, I did give the number a call to...

Here we go again folks: this time it’s a double-dose of PR announcements from Apple and AT&T that finally answer some of our biggest questions about service plans and activation for the iPhone. First up: the iPhone will work with any of AT&T’s service plans, but they have put together three bundle plans that include unlimited data, Visual...

Rochambeau the front line
Freaknomics points us to the greatest fast food promotion in memory. Beat the cashier in a game of rock paper scissors and save a buck.
What I absolutely love about this idea, other than its obvious remarkability, is the way it humanizes the previously automatonized front line worker. Instead of making them invisible, it makes them part of the deal. “Tell your Starbucks barrista a really...
DreamHost Webpanel, now with less lag!
The long processes of database upgrades for the Webpanel is now complete. With a full round of upgrades of the database hardware and software, as well as countless hours of panel code and query optimization, the panel is now running much faster than it ever has. This is good news, since the panel is being used quite a bit more than ever before! It received 140,000 page views in just the last 24...

WAMP! BAM! POW!
This morning, I needed to troubleshoot an error that was occurring in my Feed Statistics plugin when running on a Windows machine as well as under PHP 5. Since I normally do all of my development in *nix environments, I didn’t have such an environment readily available. Having installed Apache, MySQL, and PHP on Windows XP before, I knew that I could do it, but it would probably take the better...

How To: Empty a text file from the command line
Web site Hackaddict.net demonstrates how to remove the contents of a plain text file on Windows, Linux, and Mac without manually deleting the file and recreating it. This can be done by copying the contents of an empty system file into the file to be emptied:
This will create a new file named t whose contents is the word “test”: $ echo “test” > t more will display the...

Dell is Removing some of the Bloat
Dell has now taken the first step at removing some of the bloat from the computers they ship to consumers. Now when purchasing a computer you’ll have the option to opt-out of productivity software, ISP software, and photo/music management software. That’s good because many of those things are probably uninstalled by the users when they first get the computer.
